The Joker is Getting a Movie. In August 2017, Warner Bros and DC revealed that they will be creating an origin story based on Jared Leto’s version of The Joker, after the 2016 fiction film, Suicide Squad.
The Joker is one of the most well known and loved villains by DC Comics. He serves as the arch-nemesis of Batman and has been portrayed by different actors in the live action movies. While Mark Hamill remains the voice of Joker in the animated shows and films, the live action movies showcased different versions of the Joker. These include Cesar Romero (1966), Jack Nicholson (1989), Heath Ledger (2008) and the most recent, Jared Leto (2016).
Jared seemed to have big shoes to fill after the iconic performance by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. However, he did not receive enough screen time in Suicide Squadto truly showcase his version of The Joker.
In the upcoming DC movie, Leto will be playing a wider and more expansive role than his last portrayed version of Joker, making way for future spinoffs. According to reports, the actor will not only star in his stand-alone movie but will also be its executive producer.
The plot details have not been revealed yet, as Leto is still in the process of finding a new writer for his film. However, the producers want to use the environment in Suicide Squad and project it into the future for the new movie.
The Oscar-winning actor announced that he aspired to make a separate film on one of the characters in more depth after Suicide Squad was released. It was revealed that, apparently, majority of Joker’s scenes were not included in the final cut of Suicide Squad. This served as one of the reasons for Leto’s anger, as he expressed in his interview with IGN in 2016.
He stated, “Were there any that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. If I die anytime soon, it’s probably likely that it’ll surface somewhere. That’s the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out.”
Since production of Suicide Squad’s sequel was announced to begin in 2019, Jared was conflicted on whether he should start his own movie before or after its production.
Besides Jared’s Joker, Warner Bros. also said that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinnwould also have her own movie with a “Birds of Prey” feature.
However, fans were quite divided about the news as Leto’s Joker received backlash along with the other characters portrayed in the 2016 film. They were quick to point out all the flaws, and compared and criticized the movie for its failure to portray the characters correctly in accordance to the source material. Sadly, the movie performed poorly otherwise as well.
In an interview with AV Club, staff film critic, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, commented on Suicide Squad. He said, “Like so many of Ayer’s directorial efforts, Suicide Squad feels like it was re-drafted in the editing room. It’s clumsy, disrupted by at least eight different plodding flashbacks, filled with lines of dialogue that cut well into trailers but make zero sense in context, and patched up with an embarrassment of rock-along musical cues.”
Ignatiy continued, “In other words, it’s an exercise in attitude over everything else. Even the idea of nihilist camaraderie, which should come naturally with the Peckinpah-by-way-of-post-Crisis-DC premise, feels like a load of hooey; the characters are often too busy posing to exchange more than a few words at a time.”
ast year, Variety revealed that a Joker based spin-off was in the making; it would include Todd Phillips, best known for The Hangover trilogy, rumored to be the director of the franchise.
The initial plan was to create a feature film that would be apart from the DC Extended Universe, which would allow actors an opportunity to showcase their villainous roles.
Another rumor surfaced stating that Joaquin Phoenix would play the role of The Joker instead of Jared Leto. However, that rumor was soon debunked as it was confirmed that Leto was to take on the mantle of The Joker yet again.
Some fans were quite unsure about how they feel about this news considering Suicide Squad’s execution.
